Many Decades Taken Until Kamphaeng Saen Beef Cattle Was Born
Kamphaeng Saen (KPS) beef is produced in Thailand and is comparable to quality signature beefs found overseas, such as Japanese Kobe and Australian beef. The cattle that produce these high-quality meats are named following their origins and the KPS beef breed is undoubtedly named after the Kasetsart University Kamphaeng Saen Campus where it was developed.
It has been a long journey for the development and raising of KPS beef cattle to become the perfect producers of their tender, signature steak with white flecks of fat. Around 50 years ago, professors from the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture at the Kamphaeng Saen campus crossbred cattle with semen from various breeds from foreign countries. Their study took more than 20 years before KPS beef breed was successfully created with a well-matched composite breed of three species of cattle – Thai native, Brahman and Charolais.
This Thai-developed breed is easy-to-raise, grows quickly and has a uniformly colored coat. It is also very well-suited for Thailand's tropical environment because the breed has combined individual advantages of its three original species. The standard of excellence and specifications for KPS beef cattle have been created by the KPS Beef Breeders Association and include composite breed, color and shape. Many farmers have raised KPS beef cattle over time and have earned a good living from doing so.
